All Hallows' Eve

by Kelsi in , , , , ,

It is a gorgeous cool and bright Halloween here in Seattle, perfect weather for trick-or-treating in any other year. Tonight we are just hanging at home, hiding Twix, Reese’s cups, and Sour Patch Kids in the backyard for my son and sitting by the fire.

I made chocolate cake this morning in my skull cake mold

IMG_6318.jpg

I’m really in the baking groove and might make this Apple Cider Doughnut Loaf Cake from Bon Appetit tomorrow…

Tomorrow with the daylight savings change, the sun will set at 4:51pm. My plan to usher in the darkness is to sit by the fire and finish Case Histories, the first book in Kate Atkinson’s Jackson Brodie series. It’s so good…

IMG_6321.jpg

I spotted this Everlane oxblood sweatshirt today which is going on my wishlist…

Screen Shot 2020-10-31 at 12.12.14 PM.png

Also these Trader Joe’s freezer to oven croissants are a wonder and I’ve been making them for my son in the mornings. You don’t have to proof them overnight (you don’t even have to preheat the oven!) and they’re ready in 28 minutes…

It’s going to be a wild week with the election. Remember to breathe and abstain from doomscrolling. And if you can, find ways to laugh. My favorites this weekend were found on McSweeney’s

Also, On Being continues to be a bright light in my life. I never listen to an episode while I am doing something else (besides driving which isn’t as much these days). So if I’m at home, I put headphones on and sit quietly so I can take it all in.

on+being.jpg

Her lead in to the most recent episode

“This is always a starting point for meaningful change inside ourselves and our families and communities: We pull up stories we’ve been raised on in the light of what we know now. We see what was not being said, hear the questions we scarcely allowed ourselves even to think. We recover lost chapters. My colleague in radio and podcast, John Biewen, has been doing this with the interwoven questions of what it means to be human and what it means to be white. In a series called “Seeing White,” to which many people have turned in 2020, I think John has modeled something. As a documentary investigative journalist who’d covered race with the best of intentions and rigor, he realized he’d been turning to others — people of color — to be searching about racial rupture and healing. He then turned the lens back on himself.

So that’s the conversation ahead between me and John Biewen. It starts simply — tracing the racial story of our time through the story of a single life. It’s an exercise each of us can do, beginning with a curious eye on our childhoods and hometowns. And if we do this searchingly, it becomes a step towards a more whole and humane world, starting with ourselves.”

And later on this…

Tippett: Do you know Ruby Sales? She’s a civil rights elder, theologian; wonderful, one of the elders who’s with us. And she said to me in 2016, “There’s a spiritual crisis in white America”; that it was a crisis in white America. And she said, “There’s nothing wrong with being European American. That’s not the problem. It’s how you actualize that history and how you actualize that reality.” And she said, “It’s almost like white people don’t believe that other white people are worthy of being redeemed.” She was looking at our electoral — because this has real world political consequences, especially in our current political crisis. I also think of James Baldwin writing that “white people in this country will have quite enough to do in learning how to accept and love themselves and each other. And when they have achieved this, which will not be tomorrow” — this was in The Fire Next Time — “and may very well be never, the Negro problem will no longer exist, for it will no longer be needed.”

Biewen: Wow.

Tippett: It actually is a truth of life, if you can’t love yourself, you can’t love anyone else. And if white people can’t figure out how to care about each other’s well-being — that that’s part of this reckoning, as well.

Listen to the whole conversation here.

Holiday Gift Guide 2019

by Kelsi in , ,

The sun didn’t rise until 7:44am this morning and the sun will set at 4:18pm this afternoon. It definitely feels like December and we’ve been enjoying a quiet weekend cozying up to the fire and drinking mezcal hot toddys with our neighbors. Our sweet little Christmas tree is up…

My favorite Vince Guaraldi Trio “Holiday” Pandora station is on during every waking hour…

I can think of a number of rad women I’d like to give this “Women Supporting Women” tote to…

Ayako & Family jam is still one of the things I gift most year-round. Teachers, neighbors, hostess gifts. I got this stack of different plum jams from DeLaurenti in the Pike Place Market…

Possibly the number one thing on my list this year are these Moxi Lolly skates in clementine

I LOVE Aran’s second cookbook Cannelle et Vanille

And the revised classic Tartine

I just bought myself these Outdoor Research Stormtracker Sensor gloves. I love how low-profile they are and while they are not waterproof, they are well-suited for the damp cold PNW winter conditions that we’ll be in until April…

outdoor+research+gloves.jpg

I bought this amazing jacket from local Seattle company Ebbet’s Field Flannels earlier this year. I think any of the women’s league satin windbreakers would make a pretty badass gift…

My husband would love James Turrell: A Retrospective

He could also use another pair of his favorite Red Wing Heritage Chelsea Boots

I adore this Casper Glow Light which I wrote about back in September. It has been a complete game-changer especially with the dark winter mornings and I have not set an alarm since I got it. My friend Omar loves it too

Fall Style

by Kelsi in ,

Fall is still my favorite time of year - the change in weather, la rentrée and the fashion. Here is a list of some staples, a few new additions, and plenty from my wishlist starting with these two Clare V bags, the midi sac in black croco and the foldover clutch with the shoulder strap

Photo via Clare V Instagram

I love these silver Mansur Gavriel ballerina flats

Mansur Gavriel ballerina flat.jpg

Purchased last winter (and mentioned here), I still love my Salt Strap (seen below on my standby Clare V Gosee bag). It is the perfect length, super comfortable and I get stopped and asked where to get it nearly every time I’m out…

salt strap.jpg

I picked up this super affordable and aptly named Perfect Rain Jacket at J.Crew a few weeks ago and it’s still on sale!

Screen Shot 2019-09-11 at 9.21.38 AM.png

Also at J.Crew I have my eye on these Nike Blazer sneakers

Screen Shot 2019-09-11 at 8.38.23 PM.png

These high-rise vintage chinos in green and gray…

Screen Shot 2019-09-11 at 9.22.08 AM.png

And for the lofty wishlist of Things I-Absolutely-Do-Not-Need-But-Love, this gorgeous dusty pink faux fur coat

Screen Shot 2019-09-11 at 9.21.27 AM.png

I did however buy two of these perfectly cut thermals from Uniqlo in beige and gray…

Screen Shot 2019-09-11 at 9.39.37 AM.png

And also this oversized Levi’s Dad Trucker jacket

levis trucker jacket.jpeg

I love the goldenrod color that’s been popping up the last few fall seasons but it doesn’t suit my skintone. But this Everlane sweatshirt caught my eye this morning. I might just be able to pull off that deeper mustard shade…

Screen Shot 2019-09-11 at 9.31.07 AM.png

Also from Everlane, I picked up this silky cotton oversized shirt (I sized down for a slightly less oversized look)…

Screen Shot 2019-09-11 at 9.58.42 AM.png

And lastly (and arguably most important) denim. These two from AGOLDE have been my staples the last few years. I think they are perfect in every way. Jamie High Rise (see also here)…

Summer Ready

by Kelsi in , , , , , ,

School is out for the summer and we couldn’t be more ready for it. I’m thrilled to have a break from making school lunches and am looking forward to more leisurely mornings.

We had a real scorcher into the mid 90s this week and I’ve been grateful to have these bamboo roll up shades on our exterior west facing windows to cut the heat. They really do the job but I also love the diffused light they create inside the house too…

summer.jpg

Summer to me also means cobblers and crisps and this fantastic apple rhubarb cobbler from Alanna of The Bojon Gourmet is my current favorite. I mentioned Alanna’s book Alternative Baker and her miraculous gluten-free pie crust recipe last winter…

apple+rhubard+cobbler.jpg

It’s been quite a while since I’ve written anything here because I’ve been spending most of my free time reading (or sewing). A few months ago my son D got hit hard with the reading bug and on a family trip to Palm Springs he brought a book wherever we went. Waiting for his food at the restaurant, waiting for the rental car, sitting poolside. My husband and I exchanged knowing glances of “It’s happening.

D reading.JPG

I’ve been waiting for this day and as children often do, he is helping me to be my best self. His new love of reading has helped me make time for my own love of reading and I’m making it a priority and letting some of the less important things on my to-do list slide. Together we are in deep with Harry Potter and these illustrated versions are just beautiful…

Harry Potter.jpg
Hogwarts.jpg

D was also just gifted these super rad Gryffindor Vans from his very cool aunt and uncle…

vans harry potter.jpg

When I haven’t been reading, I’ve been sitting here practicing my newly acquired sewing skills (thanks to Drygoods Design)…

bernina.jpg

I can sit here working away for hours without eating or thinking about anything else. I’m so enjoying the process of learning something completely new and remembering how wonderful that feeling of “flow” is…

zipper pouch.jpg

I have a new full-length linen apron that I snagged from Amazon for $17 that I learned about from Aran via Remodelista

apron.jpg

Speaking of linen, one of the best things I’ve added to my summer wardrobe is this Everlane linen jumpsuit

Everlane linen jumpsuit.jpg

I wore it to a my brother-in-law’s 40th birthday dinner (pictured below with my stellar sister-in-laws)…

The Wives.JPG

Always a sucker for pen and paper, I have a new favorite pocket-sized notebook and pen for my endless list making…

Mnemosyne notebook.jpg

My friend Rita turned me on to Aria Code. Host Rhiannon Giddens is delightful and I’ve been “binge-listening” (is that a thing?) every chance I get…

rhiannon-giddens-aria-code.jpg

Alison Roman’s olive oil roasted chicken is on the menu for Father’s Day…

And our neighbors turned us on to the solo stove which is now on my summer wishlist…

Happy summering!

I’m looking for a new bag to haul my laptop and this classic Filson Dryden Briefcase is everything I want…

Screen Shot 2019-01-25 at 5.01.45 PM.png

It might need a Salt strap, part of “the new mom uniform of Park Slope”…

I can’t stop looking at these Nike Cortez SEs. I think that metallic gold would add enough pizzazz to carry my wardrobe through the gray winter…

nike cortez.jpg

And thinking ahead to spring, I’d like to order this sweet Tilit jumpsuit

tilitnyc jumpsuit.jpg

We don’t have plans to travel to the sun until May but I need a new one piece swimsuit and this classic one from Andie Swim looks great…

andie swim tulum.jpg

And while way out of my budget, I have a sweet spot for this Rothko-inspired Ko rug from DWR…

My Wishlist...Holiday Edition

I would love to open my closet and see this gorgeous Paris Jacket from Emerson Fry hanging in there…

emerson fry paris jacket.jpg

I have long wanted a Japanese style pinafore apron and this one from Rough Linen is perfect. It even comes in a petite option. I’d love it in the charcoal…

rough linen pinafore.jpg

The lovely back…

I would also like a proper waiter’s apron

I think this Cotopaxi Kusa Hybrid Jacket is super cool…

A duffle bag is one of the few styles I don’t have and this rad Brown Buffalo Duffalo fits the bill…

brown buffalo duffle.jpg

I am in love with this Clare V belt bag in disco stripe…

le belt bag.jpg

But the truth is I already have a Clare V fannypack that I love so what I think I really “need” is the Clare V Midi Sac

Midi-Sac---Disco-Stripe-Patchwork---HB-CB-MS-100021-BLK---Front.jpg

I’ve been looking at this Everlane cocoon coat for a long time…

everlane cocoon coat camel.jpeg

My side table is already stacked with books but I think if I had Educated I’d move it to the top of the pile…

Educated-Tara-Westover.jpg

How to be a Good Creature would have been on my list if I could have waited and didn’t already purchase it for myself…

how to be a good creature.jpg

And I have long wanted to learn how to sew and here in Seattle, Drygoods Design is the place to do it. A gift card here might ensure that I finally carve out some time in the new year to take a “This is a Sewing Machine” class

From My Wishlist...

by Kelsi in , , ,

I am on a bit of a spending hiatus. Overall I am quite conscious about what I buy, but it feels like I've added quite a bit to my closet and the skincare arsenal lately. So I'm taking a break to enjoy and use what I already have. I feel overwhelmed when I have a bit too much stuff and besides, my savings would greatly appreciate the break. (This is also a good time to re-mention YNAB - go check it out.)

Even though I'm not currently buying, it doesn't stop me from looking and adding beautiful things to my wishlist.

I have long wanted a pair of these Hoffman armchairs at the dining room table...

Hoffman Chair.jpeg

This perfect Clare V clutch in cuoio vachetta leather that I bet ages beautifully...

clare v maude.png

Also from Clare V this green bandana...

clare v le freak bandana.jpg

These sweet little stud earrings...

heart huggie earring.jpg

These rose gold black diamond huggies...

rose gold black diamond.jpg

And THESE, holy cow. They are out of my price range but I love these something terrible...

black diamond dangle earring.jpg

I'd buy this dress if I were traveling to Italy this summer...

sezane cassandra dress.jpg

And once I get through all of my current favorite facial masks, this one from REN is the next one I'd love to try...

REN wake wonderful.jpg

Also from REN, this body serum...

And my robe could use an upgrade. This waffle one from Coyuchi is the one I have my eye on...

Sick Day

by Kelsi in , , ,

My son is sick today so I have an unexpected day off. I am grateful for the day at home and a few extra hours to do laundry, tidy-up and pay the bills. Luckily I also happened to have all the ingredients to make this way delicious savory oatmeal from David Tanis for lunch. I know what I'm making for breakfast tomorrow...

savory oatmeal.JPG

The new Cuyana catalog arrived today and now I want (ahem) these three things, starting with this seersucker flounce top...

cuyana flounce top.JPG

This beautiful travel bag...

cuyana travel bag.JPG

And this seersucker dress with pockets(!)...

cuyana seersucker dress.JPG

Also going on the wishlist is another pair of Annie Costello Brown earrings. Maybe this pair? Or these?! Too hard to decide.

annie costello brown.PNG

I recently bought the pair I've been wanting for the last few years and can't stop wearing them. They elevate any outfit. By the way the pants that I am wearing below are these fantastic wide leg ones from Everlane. I just ordered them in white too...

ACB matisse.jpg

Something else that looks gorgeous with these earrings is my new dress from Doen. I bought it to wear to a California wedding this fall but plan to wear it every chance I get before then...

doen ash wrap dress.jpg

I also took some time today to sit in the sunshine and read a bit of the third Maisie Dobbs book. One of my clients turned me onto the series and now I am addicted. I love historical fiction and these are great fun to read.

I still have my eye on this beautiful Janessa Leone hat...

janessa leone ila.jpg

My husband spotted this super cool cuff and ring designed by architectural firm Marmol Radziner on his last trip to SF...

From My Wishlist - Holiday Edition

by Kelsi in ,

I hope you all had a wonderful, restful Thanksgiving with friends and family. And with that, the holidays are upon us.

The first thing on my wishlist this year is one of these grounds crew jackets from local Seattle company Ebbets Field Flannels. I just can't decide between this Seattle Metroplitans one...

Ebbets Seattle.jpg

Or this Portland Fuji one. (See the whole collection here.)

Ebbets Fuji.jpg

I think the Fuji jacket would look pretty fantastic with these silver Loeffler Randall boots that are also on my list...

I love this large barrel jug from Farmhouse Pottery...

This Away carry-on...

My friend Rita has enviable style and is a champion hat-wearer. She makes me want to be a hat-wearer as well. I can't decide but I think this one from Janessa Leone would be a good place to start...

Janessa Leone Lane.jpg

Or this one (also available at one of my favorite local shops Flora and Henri)...

Janessa Ila.jpg

I would also love this half apron from Gjusta Goods...

And if I could ask for anything, I would love to find a place for this classic now available in MOHAIR...
